Right now burning wood is very fashionable and the desire for something ‘real’ in your living room has never been greater. It seems that Gas has got a bad image in recent times due to ruthless gas companies increasing their prices ‘surprisingly’ always when its starts getting cold. Wood is often referred to as the carbon neutral option, cheaper option and greener option. Let me give you a little bit of unbiased (we sell all types of stoves) information. Say you would like to burn wood and you don’t happen to be involved in the building, joinery or tree surgery business i.e. you have to get your hand in your pocket and buy wood. Without going through numerous calculations the average cost of wood is currently higher than the cost of natural gas let alone the cost of storing and handling it. Furthermore the fossil fuel burnt in the process of wood production and delivery are significant unless you’re planning on ‘finding’ wood in the forest and cutting it with your handsaw. So is it green? is it cheap? Probably not but it certainly is great fun to watch a quality wood burning stove in action. The flame picture is completely different to that of a Gas Stove and the heat output like for like is greater with a wood burner. Multi fuel stoves fall in the same category with the cost of coal being slightly higher than the cost of natural gas. The major down side when burning coal is the fact that the glass will almost certainly become dirty because the air wash system is often disabled when burning coal. Gas stoves are very easy to use, simple to install and just as efficient as a wood burning stove with approximately 80% efficiency. The cost of running a Gas stove should be slightly lower than the solid fuel equivalents.
